Daniel Bishop. Dropping the Pilot, 1945
Given the extent of Churchill's prestige in Britain and abroad, the defeat of the Conservative Party in the 1945 elections, a defeat that turned him out of office, was somewhat unexpected. One cartoonist compared his dismissal to that of the legendary German Chancellor Otto von Bismarck, whom Kaiser Wilhelm II had dismissed in 1890. Imitating a famous drawing of Bismark by Sir John Tenniel entitled Dropping the Pilot, this cartoon of the same title depicts Churchill as a dismissed pilot.
