APRIL 27, 1865

One hundred thousand people filed past the open casket in Buffalo between 9:30 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. Former President Millard Fillmore and future President Grover Cleveland were among the mourners. At 10:00 p.m. the funeral train departed for Cleveland, Ohio. Multitudes greeted the train at each station throughout the night “with flaring torches, the sounds of guns and of bells,” according to contemporary newspaper accounts.
