Disaster Preparedness Working Group

This working group assists federal libraries and information centers in preparing for disasters by supporting and promoting cooperation among federal agencies, offering educational programs, and providing information resources for disaster recovery. The Disaster Preparedness Working Group oversees Safety Net, the Washington, D.C. regional network for disaster response.

NEW! - The Disaster Preparedness Workbook for Cultural Institutions Within the Military (1.81 mb PDF) by Beth Patkus, Preservation Consultant and Robert E. Schnare, Director, U.S. Naval War College Library (retired), is a comprehensive guide for writing a disaster manual. Staff at institutions outside as well as within the military will find this workbook an invaluable resource for creating or reviewing their own disaster plans.

Charter of Federal Library Mutual Disaster Assistance (721 kb)
Over a dozen federal institutions have signed a charter of mutual assistance, a voluntary agreement of principles for collaborating in the event of a disaster affecting one or more of the signatories.

FLICC and the Library of Congress Preservation Directorate offered a model charter (23 kb PDF) for librarians interested in collaborating with other institutions as part of the 2008 MayDay initiative sponsored by the Society of American Archivists.

Institutions celebrated the 2009 MayDay Initiative in a variety of ways. Heritage Preservation showcased several MayDay activities. The Library of Congress posted a chart of emergency scenarios to help institutions validate their emergency plans.
