The Civil Rights History Project: Survey of Collections and Repositories

Oral history of modern America collection

Repository: University of South Florida-St. Petersburg. Special Collections and Archives

Collection Description (CRHP): At present, there are 650 interviews in this collection, which come from students in Ray Arsenault's classes. Quite a few of public figures were interviewed, including the late Senator George Smathers. In addition to the 80 interviews that deal directly with civil rights and segregation, there are interviews that deal with the life of ordinary African Americans in the South and many have questions dealing with segregation, first memories of racial consciousness, etc.

Collection Description (Extant): Oral history interviews, mostly conducted by students enrolled in classes at USF St. Petersburg. Some interviews include supplemental materials, partial transcripts, or related research. Over eighty interviews were conducted with interviewees who described the bitter legacies of segregation in the American South or who answered questions about their involvement in the Civil Rights Movement. Most interviews focus on activities in the Tampa Bay region and Florida's west coast.

Access Copy Note: Please consult with Jim Schnur, special collections librarian, regarding access policies for this collection. (His contact information is listed in the people field of this record.) Some interviews are unavailable due to incomplete release forms. Plans are underway for digitizing this collection. Most of the original recordings are on standard audio cassette; however, some are on microcassette. There are few that include a CD. The bulk of the recordings are available in audio for on-site use at this time. Summary transcripts are available for select interviews.
