The Civil Rights History Project: Survey of Collections and Repositories

Presidential oral history program

Repository: University of Virginia. Scripps Library and Multimedia Archive

Collection Description (CRHP): Lloyd Cutler address his career as an attorney, working with President Kennedy, and his service on the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law.

Collection Description (Extant): The Miller Center's Presidential Oral History Program is systematically and comprehensively debriefing the principal figures in the administrations of Presidents Carter, Reagan, George H. W. Bush, and Clinton, with plans to do the same for future presidents. The program is addressing the gap in the written historical record with the personal perspectives of key administration players, describing major events and decisions in their own words. Formerly the purview of presidential libraries, today the Miller Center is the only institution taking on this work in a comprehensive way.

In addition to its work on Presidential Oral History, the Program conducts oral histories of subjects and individuals closely related to the study of presidential politics (e.g. the Falklands War Roundtable and the Lloyd Cutler Biographical Oral History Project). As these Oral Histories are opened to the public, the Scripps Library will make them available.

The Scripps Library is also making available other oral history projects related to the American presidency.

Access Copy Note: Interviews are conducted in strict privacy under ground rules intended to ensure confidentiality and encourage candid discussion. The sessions are audiotaped. After review by the respondents, transcripts are deposited in the appropriate presidential library and at the Miller Center's Scripps Library in Charlottesville to be used for research and educational purposes. Such use is subject to restrictions that an individual respondent may choose to place on the disclosure of his or her remarks made in the transcript.
