Ethel L. & Golden R. Evans oral history

Repository: College of Southern Maryland. Southern Maryland Studies Center

Collection Description (Extant): The Evans married in 1946. Both worked at Naval Surface Warfare Center and lived in Navy housing. The Evans recalled segregated workplaces. Specific jobs were for blacks and women. Mr. Evans was the first black to complete the Machine Shop apprentice program in 1951. He was not permitted to participate in the graduation ceremonies. The Evans recounted involvement with the NAACP and Freedom Riders.
