The Civil Rights History Project: Survey of Collections and Repositories

WSAZ (Television station), Huntington, West Virginia [newsfilm collection]

Repository: Marshall University. Morrow Library. Special Collections.

Collection Description (CRHP): The film archives contain material related to the civil rights movement, the Vietnam War, and any other event that had an impact on the local community between 1952 and 2002.

Collection Description (Extant): Newsfilm and tape of local National Broadcasting Company affiliate evening news broadcast; includes scripts and an index.

Access Copy Note: There is an index card file (subject, name and date cross referenced) provided by WSAZ-TV that allows users to identify individual film clips. The collection also contains all the on-air scripts read by the news anchor during the broadcast (approximately 100 linear feet) for the film which has no sound.

The archives has digitized the footage for 1952, 1953, 1954, 1957, 1958, 1959, 1968, 1970, 1971 and 1972. The 1950s footage was digitized because of the '50 Years Ago Today' web site that the archive created: The period of 1968 through 1972 was digitized for use in the film 'We Are... Marshall' that was released in 2006. The clips are not in a database, however, and staff still use the index cards and scripts as access points.

Most of the early film is all black and white (no sound) and as time passes, sound is added, color comes in during the late 1960s, and film gives way to various tape formats in the late 70s and early 80s.
