The Civil Rights History Project: Survey of Collections and Repositories

Jane White papers

Repository: Smith College. Sophia Smith Collection

Collection Description (CRHP): Jane White's father, Walter White, was the head of the NAACP from 1931 to 1955.

Collection Description (Extant): Papers include scripts, newspaper clippings, notes, publicity, correspondence, audiotapes, interviews, scrapbooks, and photographs. These materials, enhanced by White's eloquent self-reflections in interviews generated by her work on stage, document the career of a versatile performer. While the collection primarily documents White's professional career and the challenges she faced as an African American actress, her husband Alfredo Viazzi and her prominent parents, Walter and Gladys White, are also represented.
