Oregon black history projectRepository: Oregon Historical Society. Research Library
Collection Description (CRHP): The Oregon Black History Project conducted research mainly on the history of the African American people of Oregon up to the beginning of World War II but covered the period after that time period as well, including civil rights movement developments. The project was directed by Elizabeth McLagan and culminated in her book titled "A Peculiar Paradise: A History of Blacks in Oregon, 1788-1940" published by the Georgian Press, Portland, Oregon, 1980. There are four separate collections on this project at the archive. The Oregon Black History Project research notes [manuscript 2854], 1977-1980 collection consists of research notes collected during the project, including information on Ku Klux Klan activities, suffrage, and transcripts of oral histories. Two reels of microfilm contain the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) Portland Branch files for 1914 to 1955 and were added to the microfilm holdings as Mss 2004-2. Photographs relating to the project are designated Org. Lot 679. Finally, sound recordings of the interviews were created as part of the project, but the library staff considers them separate materials. These interviews are catalogued individually; the catalog records are available online as well as pasted in the document uploaded to this record.
