The Civil Rights History Project: Survey of Collections and Repositories

Oral history interviews

Repository: Hope College. Joint Archives of Holland

Collection Description (CRHP): This is an ongoing project initiated by Dr. Elton Bruins in 1977. New interview sets are added to the collection each year. In 1994, Donna Rottier interviewed 18 Asian- or African-American residents of Holland, including Eric Gray, Germaine Smith, Hollis C. Wells, and Ella Weymon. Gray, originally from the Chicago area and later an ordained minister with Teen Ministries Holland, addresses race relations and discrimination in Holland; Smith discusses her civil rights activism in Chicago and differences between northern and southern black freedom struggles, as well as race relations in Holland and her ongoing work in South Africa; Wells, who grew up in Arkansas, Missouri, and Chicago and worked in industry in Grand Rapids, also had a blueberry farm. He describes discrimination he experienced. Weymon worked as an accountant for General Motors and later started her own business. She also discusses race relations and African Americans in Holland.
