The Civil Rights History Project: Survey of Collections and Repositories

Voices of Asheville oral history collection

Repository: University of North Carolina at Asheville. Special Collections and University Archives

Collection Description (CRHP): Many of the African Americans included in this project segregation and integration in Western North Carolina.

Collection Description (Extant): Dorothy Joynes created her project, The Voices of Asheville Oral History Collection, in order to obtain a broader understanding of the people and history of Western North Carolina. The Voices of Asheville Collection is found at University of North Carolina at Asheville, Ramsey Library, Special Collections. Thirteen percent of the collection is with African-Americans from Asheville. Geographically, Joynes tried to "cover the areas from Dula Springs to Hickory Nut Gap, from West Asheville to Black Mountain". (Asheville Citizen Times, April 28, 1996) 20 manuscript cartons contain the collection.
