Madison Measure for Measure records

Repository: Wisconsin Historical Society. Library-Archives

Collection Description (CRHP): Tape 1, a speech by Fannie Lou Hamer at the University of Wisconsin, January 29, 1976, "compares race relations in the North and South and presents general comments on the condition of American society. Side 2 is largely a question-and-answer session." Tape 2 consists of remarks made by Hamer at the 11th anniversary reunion of Madison Measure for Measure, January 30, 1976.

Collection Description (Extant): Records of a Madison, Wisconsin, organization (1965-1977) which provided economic assistance for Southern blacks during the late 1960s and early 1970s. Included are correspondence, clippings, publicity materials, and financial records regarding activities, 1965-1971. The correspondence concerns fund-raising activities in Madison and contacts with civil rights activists in Mississippi and Arkansas such as Fannie Lou Hamer, L. C. Smith, and Lee Bankhead. Other prominent correspondents include Robert Kastenmeier and Carl Braden. Among the projects documented are the North Bolivar County Farm Cooperative and Fannie Lou Hamer's Freedom Farm Cooperative. The tapes are of two speeches given in Madison in 1976 by Mrs. Hamer for an anniversary celebration of Measure for Measure. Both speeches, which have been abstracted, are wide-ranging discussions of her political and racial views.
