Repository description (CRHP): Valerie Cunningham is an independent scholar specializing in African American history in New Hampshire and has written the book, "Black Portsmouth: Three Centuries of African-American Heritage" (University Press of New England, 2004). She was the long-time executive director of the Greater Portsmouth Black Heritage Trail (http://pbhtrail.org/web/). The organization includes information about Rock Rest, an African American inn, and was fundamental to ensuring its papers ended up at the University of New Hampshire. Ms. Cunningham also has materials on the establishment of the Portsmouth NAACP in 1958 in her personal possession.
