Repository description (CRHP): Repository also contains portions of larger collections held at other repositories. This includes the Southern Oral History Project Birmingham Interviews (from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill) and the Behind the Veil Oral History Project recordings and biographical materials (from Duke University).

Repository description (extant): The Birmingham Civil Rights Institute (BCRI) documents the struggle of African-American citizens in Birmingham to become full participants in the city's government and business community. Because this struggle was a social movement that caught the attention of the world, Birmingham is an appropriate place for an institution that serves the world as a center for study and reflection.
