Searching the Directory | Understanding Search Results
You can search the directory by entering search terms in one or more of the fields that appear on the screen: Name, Phone Number, Mail Stop, and Department. Below are examples of the different types of searches and what the search tool will look for.
Examples: john smith

Searches for entries containing any combination of the entered
names in the Name field.
Examples: john smith Searches for entries containing the entered name anywhere in the Name field.
Examples: ste*
j*n sm*th
Searches for entries containing the entered names, replacing
the asterisk with any combination of letters. This type of
search is helpful when you do not know the correct spelling
of a name.
Examples: 7-5555 7-55* Searches for entries containing the entered number in the Phone Number field. All Library of Congress phone numbers begin with 707; therefore, 7-5555 is the phone number (202) 707-5555.

Searches for entries containing the entered number in the
Mail Stop field. This number is used for sending internal
mail at the Library of Congress.
Example: LS/P&P/RS LS/P&P* Searches for entries containing the entered symbols for a Library of Congress department and division. For example, LS/P&P/RS is the symbol for the reference section of the Prints and Photographs Division of Library Services.
Any directory entries that match the search terms you enter are displayed on a new screen. Each entry contains different fields:
Name - the last, first, and middle initial (if available) of the staff member
Mail Stop - the four digit code used for Library of Congress internal mail
Phone - the phone number for the staff member; phone numbers are listed in the form 7-####, where 7-5555 is the phone number (202) 707-5555
Office Location - the building and office number of the staff member; LA is the Adams Building, LJ is the Jefferson Building, and LM is the Madison Building
Department - the official symbol of the Library of Congress office where the staff member works
Email - some entries may include the electronic mail address for the staff member
If no entries in the staff directory match your search terms, you will receive the message "No Matches to Your Query."
