Library of Congress Manuscript Division archive of organizational Web sites
Manuscript Division archive of organizational Web sites
The Manuscript Division Archive of Organizational Web Sites includes principally Web sites of organizations with whom the division has an existing relationship. Although diverse in content, they fall into several broad categories. First, there are sites for non-governmental, voluntary organizations, including civil rights and political advocacy groups whose records the division holds. Examples include the National Urban League, Leadership Conference on Civil Rights (now the Civil Rights Coalition for the 21st Century), National Consumers' League, National Council of Jewish Women, National Endowment for Democracy, and the League of Women Voters (LWV). The last includes not only the Web site of the national office of the LWV, whose paper records are held in the Manuscript Division, but also the Web sites of several hundred state and local LWV offices, whose records are held elsewhere.
Archived Web sites of other organizations whose records the division holds include professional and honorary organizations such as the American Historical Association, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, American Studies Association, Phi Beta Kappa Society, and the Society of Woman Geographers; memorial groups such as the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund; and research, educational, and cultural organizations such as the American Council of Learned Societies and the MacDowell Colony. The Web sites of the Association for Diplomatic Studies and Training and the Historical Society of the District of Columbia Circuit are included because of the division's ongoing relationship to their oral history programs.
Also archived are Web sites of organizations whose records are not held by the Library of Congress, but which are directly related to other collections in the Manuscript Division. These include organizational Web sites related to Frederick A. Cook, Sigmund Freud, and Ameen Rihani, and the Web sites of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, Streit Council, and American Society of Landscape Architects, which relate to the personal papers of Sam Dash, Clarence Streit, and Frederick Law Olmsted, respectively. Also included are the Web sites of the Navy League; National Coalition for History, an affiliate of the American Historical Association; and National Democratic Institute for International Affairs, Center for International Private Enterprise, and American Center for International Labor Solidarity, all affiliates of the National Endowment for Democracy.
The Web sites include a wide range of official documents, research studies, audio and video recordings, press releases, agendas and conference proceedings, blogs, electronic newsletters, and other sources documenting people, events, and activities likely to be of lasting research interest. Also documented is how organizations, many of which had been established early in the twentieth century, are incorporating technology and using the Web to reach new audiences and carry forth their missions into the twenty-first century. The thirty sites were archived between March and December 2006.
