-  Speaker Biography: Wayne D. Shirley worked as a reference librarian and music specialist in the Music Division at the Library of Congress. During that time and since, he has made substantial contributions to American music research: as editor of the quarterly journal American Music (1990-93); as an editor and board member of the Charles Ives Society, for which he prepared two critical editions; as a planner and editorial board member of Music of the United States of America (MUSA), a national series of scholarly editions, including one volume co-edited by himself; and recently, for the Estates of George Gershwin, Ira Gershwin, and DuBose Heyward, as editor of the folk opera Porgy and Bess. He has also published valuable writings on such American composers as George Antheil, Aaron Copland, Henry Cowell, George Gershwin, Victor Herbert, Charles Ives, and William Grant Still. In 2010, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society for American Music. (biographical)
