Description
The business papers of Modern Music, a journal that championed the cause of contemporary music, were presented to the Library in 1975 by its editor Minna Lederman Daniel. Modern Music was published quarterly by the League of Composers of New York City from 1924 to 1946, initially under the title The League of Composers' Review. The archives contain business correspondence, typescripts of articles, photographs, two scrapbooks, a few original drawings of composers, and a significant number of letters (some present in photocopies) by George Antheil, Theodore Chanler, Aaron Copland, Frederick Jacobi, Lincoln Kirstein, and Lazare Saminsky. Of particular interest is an article by Bertolt Brecht entitled "The Usage of Music in the Epic Theatre," which was written for the journal and not printed.
