Amelita Galli-Curci

Amelita Galli-Curci (1882–1963) was a brilliant-voiced Italian-born soprano. Originally a pianist, she was largely self-taught as a vocalist, having learned her art by recording herself on cylinders and listening critically. She enjoyed a successful career in Europe before making an enormously successful American debut at the Chicago Opera in 1916. Galli-Curci first performed at the Metropolitan Opera in 1921 and sang there until 1930. She began a long association with the Victor Company in 1916. Galli-Curci's style has been referred to as "limpid and natural"; her upper register was approached with ease and without shrillness.
