Ernestine Schumann-Heink
Ernestine Schumann-Heink (1861–1936) was an Austrian-born contralto/mezzo-soprano who was best known for her Wagner roles. She had a large repertoire and is also remembered for having premiered the role of Klytemnästra in Richard Strauss's Elektra. She began her recording career around 1899, singing two selections for Zonophone Records. After recording for the Columbia label, she began an association with Victor Records in 1906 that lasted until 1931. Her powerful voice was strong in all registers; Olin Downes remarked that "knowledge and imagination" imbued every nuance of her performance.
