Bangladesh: Supreme Court Rejects Appeals of Assassins’ Death Sentences

(Dec. 14, 2009) On November 19, 2009, the Bangladesh Supreme Court upheld the verdict of the High Court against persons accused in the 1975 assassination of the father of the Bangladesh nation, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The Supreme Court affirmed the High Court's sentence of capital punishment against all the accused individuals. Seven of the defendants, including Noor Chowdhury, were awarded the death sentence in absentia. Chowdhury has been a fugitive since the beginning of the case in 1996 and is at present living in Canada.
