Canada; Mexico; United States: Nuclear Security Cooperation

(July 30, 2010) During a recent Nuclear Security Summit held in Washington, D.C., the United States, Mexico, and Canada agreed to cooperate, in conjunction with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), on the conversion of fuel in a Mexican reactor from highly enriched to low enriched uranium. According to a press release issued on the occasion, Mexican President Felipe De Jesus Calderon “expressed the strong commitment of Mexico to prevent and suppress nuclear terrorism; with this kind of cooperation with the IAEA and our North American partners, we definitely contribute to reducing the risks associated with illicit trafficking of nuclear materials.” (Press Release, The White House, Office of the Press Secretary, Trilateral Announcement Between Mexico, the United States, and Canada on Nuclear Security (Apr. 13, 2010),
