Cape Verde; Portugal: Signature of Protocol on Sustainable Energy

(Sept. 25, 2014) Portugal and Cape Verde signed a protocol in the area of sustainable energy on September 23, 2014, during the United Nations Summit on Climate Change in New York. The protocol aims to strengthen recovery in the context of sustainable energy. It was also signed by Luxembourg, Spain, and Austria. (Press Release, Ministério do Ambiente, Ordenamento do Território e Energia, Portugal e Cabo Verde Assinam Protocolo para Reforçar a Recuperação no Âmbito da Energia Sustentável (Sept. 24, 2014).)

The protocol will enable the European Union to provide technical assistance to Cape Verde to fine tune their energy policies, promote and develop relevant projects, and facilitate the transfer of expertise between the EU and Cape Verde. Among other tasks, the EU must also help identify and present energy projects that can improve Cape Verdeans’ access to modern energy services. (Id.)

The Government of Cape Verde, in turn, must pass legislation that favors private investment in the energy sector and promotes regional cooperation for the supply of energy sources in all member states of the Economic Community of West African States. (Id.)
