India: Government Plan to Restrict Publication of Exit Polls

(Oct. 22, 2008) With the Union Government Cabinet's approval on October 8, 2008, India went ahead with plans to restrict publication and dissemination of exit polls until the completion of voting in the parliamentary (early 2009) and state assembly (later in 2008) elections. The Representation of People's Act, 1951, will accordingly be amended. In the Government's view, the restriction on telecasts would enable voters to exercise their right to vote without being influenced by exit poll projections. The Election Commission will announce the date when the ban would become effective.
