Israel: Mandatory Status Report to Parliamentary Committee re Veterans’ Pensions and Rehabilitation

(Nov. 22, 2010) On November 2, 2010, the Knesset (Israel's Parliament) passed an amendment to the Invalids (Pensions and Rehabilitation) Law, 5719-1959. The amendment imposes a duty on the Minister of Defense and on the heads of both the rehabilitation and the veterans' memorial departments in the Ministry of Defense to provide annual reports to the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee on their activities. The reports must be submitted at the beginning of the year and include the departments' yearly plans and objectives, as well as budget allocations, and be supplemented with a six-month report on meeting these goals and any additional information as requested by the Committee.

Explanatory notes for the amendment suggested that the introduction of a permanent, regulated procedure of supervision and review would further the state's commitment to veterans and their families.
