Israel: National Health Insurance Coverage for Autistic Children

(Dec. 24, 2008) On November 5, 2008, the Knesset (Israel's Parliament) passed an amendment to the National Health Insurance Law. According to the amendment, minors under 18 years of age who have been diagnosed with autism are entitled to treatment by a multi-disciplinary team with expertise in the area of child development. Insurance coverage is subject to a co-pay. Coverage extends to three (two in 2009) weekly hours. The professionals whose services are covered are physical therapists, communication clinicians, and occupational therapists.
