Israel: Veterans’ Benefits

(Aug. 19, 2010) On July 21, 2010, the Knesset (Israel's Parliament) passed an amendment to the Absorption of Veterans Law, 5754-1994. The amendment establishes a new fund for the encouragement of higher education for veterans. The Law provides that the fund's first objective is to encourage veterans to study in institutions of higher education, in geographic areas that have been designated as “areas of national priority,” by providing tuition subsidies. The fund's second objective is to encourage veterans who reside in such areas to acquire higher education by utilizing various financial aid programs, including subsidies for preparatory classes for academic studies in institutions of higher education.

The designation of areas as “areas of national priority” is made by a government declaration with the approval of the Knesset Labor, Welfare and Health Committee, in accordance with the Economic Improvement Law (Amendment for Application of Economic Program for the Years 2009 and 2010) (Amendment No. 4) 5770-2010.
