Libya: Newly Elected Constituent Assembly Appoints a Chairman

(Aug. 20, 2012) On August 10, 2012, members of the elected Constituent Assembly voted to make Mohammed Al Moqrif its new Chairman. Al Moqrif announced that the Assembly will select cabinet members for the country's transitional government. After electing a chairman during in its first session, the Assembly received legislative powers from the Transitional National Council, which had been created as a de facto government to replace the former regime of Muammar Gaddafi.

The 200-member Assembly's mission is to issue laws and draft a new permanent constitution. Parliamentary elections will be held after the Assembly approves the final draft of the constitution. Members of the Assembly anticipate that the process of drafting this constitution will take one year.
