Panama; United States: Agreements on Aviation Security

(Jan. 30, 2014) The United States and Panama signed two agreements in January 2014 aimed at providing a framework for cooperation on civil aviation security matters between the two countries. (Press Release, U.S. Embassy in Panama, The United States and Panama Expand Security Cooperation (Jan. 22, 2014).)

These are the first two formal agreements between Panama’s Civil Aviation Authority and the United States’ Transportation Security Administration. The pacts will enable these agencies to work bilaterally in order to protect air transportation, carry out security procedures and standards, and ultimately foster security in civil aviation. (Id.)

According to a press release issued by the U.S. Embassy in Panama on the occasion of the 2014 agreements, “[s]pecific areas of cooperation will include: improving technical and managerial expertise; enhancing civil aviation security standards and operations; sharing information and best practices; and participating in joint projects that strengthen aviation security.” (Id.)
