Sri Lanka: Courts to Be Restored in the North

(June 25, 2009) The Sri Lankan Ministry of Justice is working to reestablish a system of courts in the country's Northern Province, according to the Secretary of that Ministry, Suhada Gamlath. Kilinochchi, which formerly served as the headquarters of the recently defeated rebel Tamil Tigers, will be the location for a high court, a magistrate court, and a district court, while additional magistrate courts will be set up in three other towns. An existing tourist court in Welani will also become a magistrate court. Staff will be recruited to run these courts.
