Sri Lanka: Steps to Stop Underage Employment

(Apr. 14, 2009) Sri Lanka's National Child Protection Authority (NCPA) is taking steps to combat the practice of employing underage children as domestic helpers. According to Jagath Wellawatta, NCPA's chair, the existing laws will be strengthened to protect children. One change favored by NCPA is increasing the age of eligibility for work from 14 to 18. NCPA has said that underage employment damages children's right to education.
