Tanzania: Initiative to Amend Marriage Law

(Aug. 28, 2008) It was reported on August 9, 2008, that several Tanzanian legislators are seeking to change laws and cultural practices that have a harmful impact on women. Dr. Gertrude Rwakatare, a Tanzanian MP, with the support of some of her colleagues, is set to change Tanzanian laws that “undermine the welfare of women.” On the top of the list of laws that would be changed if the Rwakatare initiative receives enough support is the Tanzanian Marriage Act of 1971, which allows young girls to be forced into marriage.
