(Mar 09, 2010) The Government of India recently announced that it will issue rules to implement the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Bill, 2009, by mid-2010.
The Constitution of India was amended in 2002 to make free and compulsory education for children 6 to 14 years old a fundamental right. In 2009, the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Bill was enacted to ensure implementation of this right.
In a submission in a lawsuit seeking to eliminate child labor in India, the Indian Government stated that it is currently framing the rules that will implement the act, and these rules are expected to be ready by April or May of 2010.
