(Dec 03, 2008) ASEAN, the Association of South East Asian Nations consisting of ten nation states, has issued a press release stating that Indonesia has ratified the ASEAN Charter. Indonesia is the last ASEAN member to ratify the charter that will now come into force 30 days after the deposit of all instruments of ratification. (Thailand and the Philippines have also ratified the ASEAN Charter but have not yet deposited their instruments of ratification.)

The ASEAN Charter is effectively a constitution for ASEAN that provides the organization with a legal personality, establishes how members are to be admitted, and provides for governance. (Press Release, ASEAN Secretariat, ASEAN EMBARKS ON NEW ERA - ASEAN Charter Fully Ratified (Oct. 21, 2008), available at http://www.aseansec.org/22022.htm.)
