(Jan 05, 2009) The Uruguayan Congress passed Law No.18360 on September 26, 2008, concerning the installation of external automatic defibrillators in public or private establishments where large numbers of people gather. The Law states that those establishments are to have at least one external automatic defibrillator maintained in proper operating condition and available for immediate use in case of emergency. Those who manage the spaces will be responsible for the installation and maintenance of the defibrillators and for the training of their employees in basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation, through programs with approved courses and instructors authorized by the Ministry of Public Health. Except when other norms impose a specific responsibility, any person in charge of the maintenance and availability of the defibrillator, acting with the proper diligence, will be exempt from any liability. The acquisition of external automatic defibrillators, equipment to teach cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and training and coaching in the techniques of their use is declared to be of national interest.
