"Enduring Outrage" closes

February 3, 2007, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.
Closing today in the "American Treasures" exhibition, "Enduring Outrage: Editorial Cartoons by Herblock" features approximately 40 original cartoon drawings by the Pulitzer Prize winning political cartoonist Herblock. The exhibition's central section, "Get Out the Vote," chronicles elections from 1946 to 1998 and covers most of the presidential administrations from the 1940s through the 1990s commenting on Democrats and Republicans alike. Other sections focus on six major themes of enduring importance to Herblock that continue to resonate in American society today: environment, ethics, extremism, the Middle East, privacy/security and war. In addition, rough sketches for finished drawings will be included for the first time in a Library of Congress exhibition.

"American Treasures" Closes

February 5, 2007, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.
"American Treasures at the Library of Congress" is temporarily closed through Feb. 21. The gallery will reopen on Feb. 22 with new installations on William Shakespeare and "A Century of Creativity: The MacDowell Colony 1907-2007."

Shakespeare

A display case of items pertaining to the bard will be on view in the "American Treasures" exhibition through Aug. 18. Coordinated in conjunction with a city-wide "Shakespeare in Washington" festival taking place January  June, the exhibition will include lithographs, engravings, colorful tobacco labels with Shakespearean characters, Federal Theater Project posters and costume designs, and the Batchelder and Ford's Theater collections of souvenir programs and production materials. Beginning in February, the Library will also offer special Shakespeare-themed tours of the Jefferson building. For more information on the festival, visit www.ShakespeareinWashington.org.

The MacDowell Colony

"Cartoon America" closes

"Cartoon America: Highlights from the J. Arthur Wood Jr. Collection of Cartoon and Caricature" features selections from more than 36,000 original cartoon drawings now housed in the Prints and Photographs Division. Seventy of the best American cartoons from the 1870s through the 1980s are represented, including works by Thomas Nast, Rube Goldberg, Pat Oliphant, Hanna-Barbera, Walt Disney Productions, Charles Schultz and Al Hirschfeld.
