The Moscow Sretensky Monastery Choir comes to America for the first time, performing Byzantine and Russian chant, folk song and Russian romances. Although the supply of tickets is exhausted, there are often empty seats at concert time. The Library celebrates the 50th anniversary of the musical "West Side Story" with the exhibition, "West Side Story: Birth of a Classic." The exhibition features items from the Library's Leonard Bernstein Collection, including Bernstein's copy of "Romeo and Juliet" with annotations about turning it into a musical, an early outline for the show, Bernstein's annotated audition notes, opening night telegrams, rehearsal and production photographs, two original watercolor set designs by Oliver Smith and original music manuscripts, sketches and related choreographic notes.
