Listserv Netiquette

Languages: English - Spanish

The official language of the IME ICC2 meeting in Buenos Aires and this listserv is Spanish. As resources allow, we will provide English summaries or translations of messages posted to the list in Spanish.

Below is a summary of common practices for communicating via a list serv. Every participant is expected to adhere mindfully to these discussion guidelines.

The guidelines are offered to facilitate communication and to effectively share information with the group of participants.

When sending a message:

  • DO identify yourself. Include your name and institution, if appropriate. It is assumed that participants speak for themselves, and what they say does not represent their institution (unless stated explicitly).
  • DO keep postings on the specified discussion topics of the list. Messages not pertinent to the list will be blocked and discarded by the moderator without distribution to the group.
  • DO keep your messages brief and concise. Messages over 100 lines are considered too long. Do not attach files larger than about 50K. Do not post questions that you could have found the answer to yourself with a little research.
  • DO use a descriptive subject header that summarizes clearly the content of the message.
  • If your posting is only of interest to a specific geographic area, limit the distribution to that area.
  • DO search the list archives prior to posting a question to prevent repeat questions.
  • DO allow time for your message to be received and replied to. If you have posted a message and do not see it immediately, do not assume it is failed and re-post it.
  • DO NOT use all upper case; this looks as if you were shouting.
  • DO NOT post messages containing any defamatory, abusive, profane, or offensive language, or post illegal material.
  • DO NOT post test messages to the list. Contact the list owner for assistance, if you have a problem posting.)
  • DO NOT post messages to promote sale or distribution of products or services of any kind.

When responding to a message:

  • DO summarize or quote relevant parts of the message when responding to a message, but DO NOT resend the entire original message.
  • DO NOT be critical of other's queries posted to the list. Send a private message and make constructive suggestions, if appropriate. If you should find yourself in a controversy with one person send your responses via e-mail rather than continue to send messages to the list. If you are debating a point on which the group might have some interest, you may summarize for them later.
  • DO NOT send messages with little content, such as "I agree!", to the entire list. Send this type of reply, or any personal response to the sender of the original posting.
  • DO NOT send messages with personal responses to the group. Think twice before sending a response to a message with the "reply" command, that makes the system to automatically send a copy of your message to every participant of the list ("one-to-many"). If your message is intended for the person who posted the original message ("one-to-one") you should contact that person directly via his/her e-mail.
  • DO NOT post comments that do not add anything to the discussion. Contribute new information; do not go in circles by making comments to the comments.
