The following is a calendar year report. However, statistical data is based on the fiscal year Oct. 1, 2003, through Sept. 30, 2004.
The Library marked several milestones in 2004, including the 65th anniversary of the Hispanic Division and a decade of the Library's National Digital Library Program.
The Library continued to share its vast resources locally as well as globally through its award-winning Web site (www.loc.gov). At year's end the site contained more than 9.5 million American historical items for scholars and researchers, children and families. Through a collaborative digitization effort known as Global Gateway, the Library added materials that highlight the multicultural influences that have shaped the nation. The Library also continued to work in cooperation with other organizations to develop a National Digital Information and Infrastructure Program to identify and preserve the nation's digital heritage. In September the Library announced awards totaling $13.9 million to eight lead institutions and their partners to identify, collect and preserve historically important digital materials.
