Provided reference services to 667, 409 individuals (in-person, by telephone and through written and electronic correspondence).
Contained 132,192,304 items in the collections, including:
- 20,050,602 cataloged books in the Library of Congress classification system
- 9,961,146 books in large type and raised characters, incunabula (books printed before 1501), monographs and serials, music, bound newspapers, pamphlets, technical reports and other printed material
- 102,180,556 items in the nonclassified (special) collections.

- Completed 906,445 research assignments for Congress through the Congressional Research Service.
- Recorded more than 3.7 billion transactions on all of the Library's public computer systems. At year's end the library's American Memory online historical collections contained 10 million items.
- Employed a permanent staff of 3,992 employees.
- Operated with a total fiscal 2005 appropriation of $584,870,304, including authority to spend $39.5 million in receipts.
