Librarian Receives Rare Tennessee Williams Folio of Dramatic Work

Librarian of Congress James H. Billington recently accepted a book of Tennessee Williams' plays on behalf of the Library of Congress. Presented by Librix Continuum, a book arts and fine-bookbinding company, "TENNESSEE" is an elephant folio, four-color letterpress, rare limited edition contemporary work containing the first publication and first printing of Williams' recently discovered play, "These Are the Stairs You Got to Watch." Also included in the book is original artwork by Clarice Smith of some of the playwright's most famous heroines.

"Thank you for the creativity of this gift, which is particularly important to us. This book is a wonderful way of keeping alive the craft of composing a book as a piece of art," said Billington, shown here, from left, with Clarice Smith, book artists John Greenawalt and Stephen Vanilio, book editor David Smith and former Missouri Congressman James Symington.
