Videophone Assists Deaf, Hard-of-Hearing

A man using sign language to communicate in a videophone conversation.

Fred Pickering, a deaf information technology specialist in the Library’s Information Technology Services office, uses the new Video Relay Service to communicate with a colleague (seen on the left side of the monitor screen) using sign language. A camera mounted above the computer captures Pickering as he signs, and his face can be seen on the right side of the monitor screen in front of him. - Michaela McNichol
