Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.) and her daughter offer their contribution to the Lincoln time capsule. - Brian Williams
Members of Congress wrote their reflections on President Abraham Lincoln and sealed them in a time capsule for placement in the Library for safekeeping until the 250th anniversary of Lincoln’s birth, in 2059.
Ronald Sarasin, president of the U.S. Capitol Historical Society, sealed the 111th Congress Time Capsule, and Jim Hutson, chief of the Library’s Manuscript Division, transported it to the Library, where it will be kept and preserved. Among those attending the July 23 ceremony in the Members Room of the Jefferson Building were local children, representatives of the U.S. Capitol Historical Society and members of Congress and staff, including Reps. Zack Wamp (R-Tenn.), Robert Aderholt (R-Ala.), Gregory Meeks (D-N.Y.) and Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.), along with Tom Fazzini, press secretary of Nebraska Senator Ben Nelson, and Henry Parker, representing Rep. Betty McCollum (D-Minn.).
Boy Scout troops 1174 and 343 and Cub Scout Pack 343 from the National Capital Area Council attended the event, along with youths from the Columbia Heights neighborhood of Washington, accompanied by the D.C. Children and Youth Investment Trust Corporation, and several young women who were guests of the D.C. Youth Advisory Council. The youngest were from the Summer Enrichment Program, which includes children of several members of Congress.
