Reading Rooms Closed on Sundays

The seven reading rooms of the Library of Congress, which previously offered Sunday service, are now closed on Sundays.

As previously announced, the Law Library and the Main, Newspaper and Current Periodical, Science, Microform, and Local History and Genealogy reading rooms will resume hours of 1-5 p.m. after Labor Day, on Sept. 12.

As stated in a press release issued last December, use of these rooms on Sundays in the summer is lower by one-third than during the rest of the year. In the 236-seat Main Reading Room, for example, an average of 72 people use this room on Sundays, as opposed to an average of 108 on Sundays during the rest of the year.

Monday through Saturday hours remain the same throughout the year. For further information on the location and hours of all the reading rooms of the Library, call the recorded message at (202) 707-6400 or dial in to the Library of Congress News Service at (202) 707-3854 using a modem-equipped PC.

Access to exhibition areas in the Madison Building also remain the same. "Scrolls from the Dead Sea," a major exhibition on display through Aug. 1, is open to the public 10 a.m. -5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1-5 p.m. on Sundays. Due to continuing renovation, the Great Hall of the Jefferson Building is closed until late 1994 or early 1995, with the exception of occasional special exhibitions on display there.
