Berlin Divided
Peter Schneider Reads from Works

Renowned German author and novelist Peter Schneider read from three of his books on Sept. 5 for the Library's Archive of World Literature on Tape. He was welcomed to the Library by David H. Kraus, assistant chief of the European Division, and Margrit B. Krewson, German/Dutch area specialist.

Peter Schneider

Mr. Schneider read first from The Wall Jumper (1983), the English translation of Der Mauerspringer (1982). He next read in German from Paarungen (Couplings) (1992), and finally he read excerpts of an unpublished and untitled German manuscript.

The theme of the works he read reflects his fascination with Berliners' political and psychological ambivalence while their city was divided. Mr. Schneider has studied at the universities of Freiburg, Munich and Berlin and has lived in Berlin since 1962. The city is both the setting and focus of much of his work. A political journalist and essayist as well as a novelist, Mr. Schneider also wrote the screenplay for the film "Knife in the Head."
