The purpose of the U.S. Geological Survey's World Petroleum Assessment Project is to develop geologically based hypotheses regarding the potential for undiscovered oil and gas resources in priority provinces around the world. The assessment is based on the geologic elements of the total petroleum system defined in the province, including petroleum source rocks, reservoir rocks and petroleum traps.
