FIELD DEFINITION AND SCOPE

One-character alphabetic code that indicates a specific organization's tracing practice for a series named in the 1XX field of an established heading record for a series. May also contain the volumes/dates and/or the institution/copy identification to which the tracing practice applies.

Code specifies whether the series is used as a series added entry or as an untraced series note in bibliographic records. Field 645 is not used to indicate that a series-like phrase is not traced. Varying tracing practices for different ranges of volumes/dates within a series, for different copies or sets within the same organization, or for different organizations are contained in separate 645 fields.
