The Network Development and MARC Standards Office of the Library of Congress is preparing the 1998 edition of the USMARC Code List for Geographic Areas. The following details code changes since the previous (1994) edition. Major changes include changed codes for the former Soviet republics and a changed code for Hong Kong. Note that a previous announcement dated July 16, 1997 stated that the geographic area code for Hong Kong would not be changed despite its change in status; this announcement changes that decision.
