Proposal No. 2011-11: Addition of 1st Indicator Value 7 in DDC Number Fields

1. BACKGROUND

In developing a registry of DDC editions, the Dewey Editorial Team realized that it needed the ability to to accommodate DDC editions other than full and abridged.  The “other” indicator was introduced as value 8 in the 084 field in the classification format, but not carried over to relevant fields in the other formats.  In the MARC 21 formats, value 7 often indicates that the specific source is recorded in subfield $2 and value 8 indicates something other than the defined values, but it is unspecified.

2. DISCUSSION

2.1. Addition of 1st indicator value 7 in DDC number fields

The MARC 21 Classification format defines codes for the kind of edition of a classification scheme:

with further description/identification of the “other” edition contained in subfields $a, $b, $c, and $d.

While available in the Classification format, the ability to indicate a specific edition other than full or abridged is not available in the Dewey number fields (fields 082 and 083) in the MARC 21 Bibliographic, Authority and Community Information Formats. There are some translations of the Dewey Decimal Classification that do not correspond either to the full or abridged edition, and there is a need to specify the source. The specific edition number or other identifier associated with such a translation plus its MARC language code would still be contained in subfield $2, as is the case with first indicator values 0 (Full edition) or 1 (Abridged edition).

The 082 field is defined in the Bibliographic Format as follows:

Value 7 has been used widely to indicate another source that is specified in subfield $2. Source codes will be defined for use in this subfield when appropriate.

Below is the list of fields used by the DDC to which the addition of 1st indicator value 7 (Other edition specified in $2) is needed:

Bibliographic Format

082 Dewey Decimal Classification Number
083 Additional Dewey Decimal Number

Authority Format

082 Dewey Decimal Call Number
083 Dewey Decimal Classification Number

Community Information Format

082 Dewey Decimal Classification Number

2.2. Example

Following is an example of the use of first indicator value 2 in field 082. The class number was assigned using the Norwegian DDK 5, a translation not directly tied to the English-language standard edition.

082 74 $a 839.82 $2 5/nor $q[assigning agency]

3. PROPOSED CHANGES

In field 082 in the Bibliographic, Authority, and Community Information formats and in field 083 in the Bibliographic and Authority formats:

3.1. Revise the first indicator as follows:

First Indicator - Type of edition
Designates whether the classification number is from the full or the abridged edition of the classification schedules or another edition as specified. The actual edition designation is contained in subfield $2.

3.2. Define first indicator value 7 as follows:

7 – Other edition specified in subfield $2
The edition is specified in subfield $2 (Edition number) because it is something other than the defined values.
