Proposal No. 2013-04: Defining New Code for Score in Field 008/20

1. BACKGROUND

In 2012, as recommended in MARC Proposal No. 2012-07, a new code value for extent of notated music was defined in MARC 21 008/20 (format of music) to provide a direct equivalent for the RDA term vocal score. This value was as follows:

k - Vocal score
Score showing all vocal parts, solo and/or choral, with the instrumental accompaniment either arranged for keyboard(s) or other chordal instrument(s) or omitted. Note: See code h (Chorus score) for scores of works for solo voices and chorus that include only chorus parts.

Since the creation of the above-noted code was necessitated by the April 2012 update of RDA, which revised the definition of “Vocal score” to include the possibility of accompaniment being omitted, codes c and d (Voice score) needed to be redefined since d is for “a score for a vocal work with the accompaniment omitted.”  Those revised definitions are as follows:

c - Accompaniment reduced for keyboard
Score with instrumental accompaniment reduced for keyboard(s). For chorus scores and vocal scores prefer codes h (Chorus score) and k (Vocal score).

d - Voice score with accompaniment omitted
Score for solo and/or choral voice(s) with the accompaniment omitted. Vocal works originally unaccompanied are assigned other codes as appropriate. For chorus scores and vocal scores, prefer codes h (Chorus score) and k (Vocal score).

In the process of clarifying these new and revised code values, we realized that since RDA defines score to include “music for solo instruments, etc.” the current values of codes a and z are also no longer valid.

Therefore, following the precedent set with 2012-07 – that is, create a new code for RDA-specific definition of vocal score, and redefine the codes that are rendered invalid by this change – we hereby recommend the creation of a new code to define the RDA-specific definition of score, and then revise the definition of codes a and z.

2. DISCUSSION

2.1. Define code value [l]

To provide a direct equivalent in MARC21 008/20 to the term score as it is now defined in RDA, a new value is proposed. l – Score:

l - Score
Graphic, symbolic, or word-based musical notation representing the sounds of all the parts of an ensemble or a work for solo performer or electronic media. Do not confuse with Part.

2.2. Redefine code values a and z

In addition to the afore-mentioned creation of code k, and redefinition of codes c and d, MARC Proposal No. 2012-07 also stated that the use of code c and d “is discouraged in RDA cataloging” because they no longer have a direct equivalency in RDA. With the proposed creation of code l, code a will also no longer have a direct equivalency in RDA. Therefore, we feel that its use in RDA should be discouraged. Additionally, now that the RDA definition of score includes “a work for solo performer or electronic media” code z’s definition can no longer include “piano music”, a form of music for solo performer. Therefore, we feel that code z will need to be redefined.

We propose that these codes be redefined as follows:

Current Language:

a - Full score
Series of staves containing all the instrumental and/or vocal parts of a musical work, arranged so that they can be read simultaneously.

Proposed Language:

a - Full score
Series of staves containing all the instrumental and/or vocal parts of a musical work, arranged so that they can be read simultaneously. For graphic, symbolic, or word-based musical notation representing the sounds of all the parts of an ensemble or a work for solo performer or electronic media, prefer the use of code l (Score).

Current Language:

z - Other
None of the other defined codes are appropriate. Usually it signifies that the item is not a score. Piano music, compositions in graphic notation, and compositions that consist only of instructions for performance are examples in which code z is appropriate. Sets of parts are also assigned code z.

Proposed Language:

z - Other
None of the other defined codes is appropriate. Usually it signifies that the item is not a score. Choir books, table books, and sets of parts, are examples in which code z is appropriate.

3. PROPOSED CHANGES

In the Music 008/20 field (Format of music) in the MARC 21 Bibliographic Format:

• Add new code value l (Score) and define as above.

• Redefine code values a (Full score) and z (Other) as above.
